Artist's Statement 2024- 2026 (June)

Bijanka Bacic works from photographs taken on film. The limit of thirty-six frames forces a slower kind of looking: she photographs for light, angle and rhythm rather than subject. Each image is redrawn in gouache, then translated onto canvas, where strips of oil cut across the surface and interrupt what lies beneath. What stays visible is the two structures, not the image.

The Disruption series begins either from bare linework taken out of a larger sketch, or from a failed painting cut down. Worked at a smaller scale and at speed, each is built by addition and removal until it stops. They are a testing ground for what the slower, procedural paintings cannot reach.
