Artist’s statement 2022 - 2024 (Feb)

‘To rethink the world and seek meaning through a visual language. Where an inscribed understanding can be accessed through a form of abandonment to the process. Allured by its forces of rule-making and rule-breaking, order and chaos.’

Across these paintings, Bacic worked from sketches after other painters, copied from reproductions rather than encountered first hand, and used as points of departure rather than depiction. Forms and mixed pigments accumulate until the surface reaches a state of tension. The grid is then stretched towards dissolution; in the later canvases, its remaining structure collapses into the stripe.
